Ben Goodman - Object Maker

My work provides a visual context with which to consider an idea, concept or feeling. Images that inspire me become a vital part of my visual language – almost as important as the work itself. These images often reflect unexpected combinations:

The natural with the made worlds – structures such as a contemporary bridge in northwest Scotland, a dam high in the Swiss Alps (Emosson dam), and a sculpture installation of life-sized cows in the financial district of Toronto (by Joe Fafard) - all of these are impressive examples of effective integration of the made into the natural environment

A single blade of dried grass in a large open field of snow - a very eloquent composition. Expressing more with less is an important concept to me.

The dichotomy of glass bolted with large steel fittings - the fragility of one material and the hardness and strength of the other. A successful marriage of unlikely partners.

My work as an artist provides me with a clear way of viewing the landscape and a vocabulary to express this view. I am challenged to ensure that my work has a strong voice and is not just about technique.
